First edition. This copy inscribed by the author to his son on the front free endpaper; "C.C.O. from his affectionate father, April 7th 1929". Charles Chichele Oman (1901-82), was a noted antiquarian, author of a number of works on domestic silverware, keeper of the Department of Metalwork at the V & A, and an active member of the Folklore Society. Largely comprised of papers that were "by-products" from Oman's opus magnum A History of the Peninsular War. Included are "Four stories of Secret Service, [which] will I think be new to most readers: they illustrate the different fashions the underworld of political and military intrigue which escapes notice in general histories" (Preface). The subjects of these tales are the Baron de Agra, James Robertson, Baron Kolli, and Colquhoun Grant. A well-preserved copy with a pleasing association.
