First edition, first printing, presentation copy of the first book in the Sac Prairie saga, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "For William J. McElmee, the dark colours from a Sac Prairie Mosaic, August Derleth." The recipient of this superb inscription was the publisher at Ritten House, Philadelphia, which would from 1938 print Derleth's poetry collections. August Derleth (1909-1971) was a hugely prolific writer, and friend of H. P. Lovecraft, who in 1939 founded Arkham House in order to print the work of the Cthulu Mythos (a term Derleth himself coined). Of all his many literary and editorial endeavours, Derleth considered the Sac Prairie Saga to be his most important.
