First edition, first impression, scarce in the dust jacket. Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed from the author, presenting the book: "Edgar, with every good wish, from Gerald. March 27th 1936" (on French's embossed letterhead). This is a defence of the author's father, Sir John French, from Field-Marshal Haig's "amazing onslaught" on his reputation that appeared following the publication of Haig's diaries: "Major French deals clearly and carefully with the entire matter and answers each point in detail" (jacket blurb).
