First UK edition, first impression. The US edition was published in the same year by Farrar, Straus & Giroux. This copy contains four documents laid in. The first, an unpublished typed letter signed by Bowles, is addressed to "Jamie", or James Leo Herlihy, the American novelist, and dated 13 August 1967. It discusses Herlihy's opinion of The Time of Friendship, which Bowles had published earlier that year, and reiterates Bowles' thoughts on Herlihy's short story collection, A Story That Ends with a Scream and Eight Others: "I read the title story again and still find it perfect." An excerpt from a letter to Herlihy appears as the blurb on this edition of letters. This copy also includes three newspaper clippings which feature obituaries for two other members of the Tangiers expatriate community, socialite David Herbert and painter Marguerite McBey. Both moved to Tangiers in 1947. Bowles is quoted in the second of Herbert's obituaries.
