Additionally inscribed on the title page by Bowles to his biographer Virginia Spencer Carr, which reads 2for Virginia, with all my love, - Paul, Tangier, 6/11/96". Virginia Spencer Carr Bowles first met Bowles in 1989 for an interview on Tennessee Williams. They formed a close friendship, and, on Gore Vidal's suggestion, Carr stopped working on her Williams biography and started work on Paul Bowles: A Life (2004). "This volume collects all of Paul Bowles' stories, many of them long out of print and unavailable, written over a period of more than thirty years, and presents them for the first time as an entity."
