First edition, first impression. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed in blue-green ink on the front free endpaper: "Walter Jerrold, affectionately from Ford Madox Hueffer. June 15th 1905" (the book was published on 2 May). An excellent association copy: Walter Jerrold (1865-1929) was a prolific author and a familiar figure on the Edwardian literary scene; he himself penned four works on the capital, from The Heart of London (1904) to In London's By-Ways (1925). The Ford collection at Cornell shows that the author and Jerrold were corresponding as early as the 1890s. Bookplate of George and Ianthe Menges; the crime writer Ianthe Menges (1898-1977), was the daughter of Walter Jerrold.
