First edition, in contemporary boards and with no library markings, of one of the key scientific texts of the 19th century. "In 1840 [Liebig] asserted with his customary passionate conviction that only the mineral elements of the soil were essential to plant health and growth. Humus he derided. We now know that in this he was wrong: and fanatics have even gone to the other extreme, decrying all use of the artificial fertilisers that Liebig advocated. But his insistence on the importance of artificial fertilisers was vital to a solution of the problem posed by Malthus." PMM. With this and his follow-up work Die organische Chemie in ihrer Anwendung Physiologie und Pathologie (1842), Liebig "thus became the founder of the modern science of nutrition." (PMM).
