First and only edition. Presentation copy of this attractive, privately-printed travel account, inscribed by the author "To Mr W. H. Luther, from the author in remembrance of many happy days spent together in Egypt, James Smith, See page 42 line 15" on the front free endpaper verso; on the page indicate the author mentions "a gentleman from Glasgow" whom he met on the train from Cario to Ismailiya, and who became his companion for the rest of his time in Egypt. The illustrations, which include views, antiquities, street scenes, and portraits, are from sources including Cassell's Bible Lands Art Series, the Cairo studio of Pascal Sébah, and the author's own picture collection. "James Smith was born in 1835, the son of a farmer in Alves, Aberdeenshire. He graduated MA from King's College, Aberdeen, in 1856, and BD from Edinburgh University in 1865. He was licensed to preach in 1860 but became assistant Professor of Greek at Aberdeen University for a year before being ordained as assistant to Newhills Parish, Aberdeen in 1862. He was admitted assistant and successor there in 1874. He was a much-loved minister but also retained an interest in education: he served on Aberdeen University Court from 1888 to 1903, and published on agricultural education. He was awarded an honorary LL.D. by the University in 1892, and died in 1917 after a long illness" (University of Aberdeen, Special Collections, online). At the time of writing he was minister at St George's in-the-West, Aberdeen. In 1895 he published a similar account, A Pilgrimage to Palestine, to a "most cordial reception" (Author's Preface).
