First edition, first impression, of one of the author's most influential works, his sociological study of religion. "In his last great work, The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life, Durkheim gave his most compelling demonstration of the structuralist method, tracing relationships between social organization, religious beliefs, and such fundamental categories of thought as space, time, and causation. He seemed to have brought about the 'sociologization of everything'" (Ken Thompson, Émile Durkheim, 2002, p. 23). From the library of Steven Lukes, Durkheim's biographer, with his ownership stamp to the front free endpaper, binder's blank and title page. Steven Lukes is Professor of Sociology at New York University and the author of several titles on Durkheim, including the acclaimed Emile Durkheim, his life and work: a historical and critical study (1973). Lukes was quoted in a 2015 interview as considering The Elementary Forms of Religious Life as Durkheim's masterpiece.
