First edition, first impression of Hopkins' second mystery novel With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "Alas, Nicholas Blake knows my methods, I can hardly hope he will applaud the manner in which I apply them, But because I am assured he is not likely to pronounce upon this one over the air I ask his acceptance of it and thereto subscribe my name Kenneth Hopkins". Nicholas Blake of course was the thriller writing pen-name of the poet laureate C. Day Lewis. Hopkins was himself a poet and a critic of some note who wrote a number of influential essays on Day Lewis and the poets of his generation.
